"I found myself in the middle of a song whilst eating at a little restaurant Italiano....I had a window facing the hustling stream of people marching up and down the street....each one of them looking as if they were (much like myself) somewhere else in their own minds... So I pulled out my sketch pad and wrote the words "scenes from an Italian restaurant" on a blank piece of paper and placed it in my window......I cannot begin to tell you how many people stopped and read the sign....when they did I would pose as if I were frozen ....a glass of wine in my hand or a fork near my open mouth full of spaghetti hanging down into my plate. Some people got it and laughed....some rolled their eyes and walked away....others just didn't get it....a few people walked away then came back ...one elderly couple squeezed each other smiling and kissed....It amazes me that the majority of people see something but have moved on before they have processed what they really just saw. Perhaps when they get into bed and have that time when your brain just randomly wanders in the dark before you hit R.E.M, they will think about what they saw me do...and get it.
But I put about as much faith into this as I do the New Jersey Turnpike."
